So, it’s the Flaming Fists of Fiery Fury (TM)! Soon to inflict the Marauding Monkey with Momentous Misery (C). Leaping Lizards (R)! Oh, wait, no. That one belongs to Little Orphan Annie.
Though I do notice that Lemme seems to jump around a lot. And yet she insists on those high heels. There’s already a bunny on the team.
Yeah, it’s the early Superman trap. Flying without wings really makes no sense. But having a different reaction to gravity than others around you does. If we were able to live on Mars humans would have superpowers. So a hero like Lemme does a lot of jumping. But it didn’t take long for Superman to stop leaping over tall buildings and make the slight (albeit impossible) adjustment to flying. However Lemme’s power is DNA re-sequencing. So she may fly sometime but she’ll have grown some kind of wings first..which I am guessing will hurt..a lot.
You should be careful about saying that wings make sense, just like that, since I was the guy who questioned the feasibility of Elfquest’s giant birds on the fledgling Internet forums back in the early 90s, and inadvertently started a debate that seemed to last for years. 🙂 There is a reason that flying birds don’t get heavier than about 12 kg or so. King Kong-sized apes have similar problems. It’s all got to do with surface to weight ratios.
Don’t get me wrong. I love science fiction, and always have. It was the main reason that I learned English in my youth because so little of it existed in Norwegian. But sometimes I find that pieces of science that I know something about is so horribly misrepresented that I wish they would just have skipped it or gone for the supernatural explanation instead.
Yngvar, you are not factoring in her DNA re-sequencer. If she can alter her body structure she could give herself hollow bones, smaller internal organs, etc…really, whatever she needs to make herself lighter for the flight.
Either way, I am reminded of the old Teen Titans TV spot. “I wish I had cool swooshy lines around me when I’m doing stuff.” You guys both have a love for the silver age comics, don’t you?
Well, that was the tone we wanted to set. That’s why the background is on newsprint. They haven’t printed comics on newsprint in a long time. Since Lemme left this reality in 1987 and came back today I wanted the book to also look like it was from 1987 and in mint condition.
As a colorist…me too. The great thing about newsprint is that it has a tint. So it gave all the colors (no matter how garish they sometimes were back then) a base color to give them some balance.

Besides, Superman flying *does* look cool. 🙂
Well, he’s *obviously* a radioactive cyborg gorilla mutant, so he’s okay at that size. Until Lemme hits him in the face.
Holaved…obviously 🙂

Well, ya done good. Man, I miss the thick newsprint-like pages sometimes…

Fun Fact: It’s a gorilla, so it’s an ape, *not* a monkey. I saw “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2”, y’know! 🙂
Heat of the moment. Although she might be a species-ist. Some people cover those dark prejudices up well. 🙂
